About Quiknets and about Ireland

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

What’s this blog to be about?  Hard to decide, I find…..Well, certainly from time to time I’ll talk about Quiknets as a communications and collaboration system, currently open to anyone to use, with 10 megabytes of on line space for each registered user.

But I also intend to talk about Ireland, where I live, and Irish perspectives, the Irish meeja, and how the world is seen thru green lenses.

Today, all the focus is on the Ryder Cup, which was nearly washed out a few hours ago and we heard on the radio of up to 40,000 spectators left outside the fence since very early this morning, for fear that high (ish) winds might roll over hoardings on top of them if they were allowed in to watch a practice round. There’s been some controversy and not a little competition among the rich and powerful over placing of their hospitality tents. One group was promised that they’d be beside the 17th, not 16th fairway if they could assure organisers that both Bill Clinton and Bill Gates would attend in their tent. They couldn’t deliver and were downgraded, as they saw it…….even tried to get a court order against the organisers, would you believe. It seems that, to get your lunch in a tent beside the 17th or 18th, you’ve got to be seriously highly connected, maybe even to Dr. Smurfit himself!

The weather forcast ain’t great. ‘Twas a little windy today but worse is expected tomorrow and the competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday could be wet in places. But hopefully not. Presumably the K-Club has sorted out its old flooding problem and all will be well and the tented village will withstand the gales.

Two to one on the US to win.
